I'd like to know what you all think of spats (for Clydes and Shires).

Personally, I have not been all that impressed with their function. I have tried them a couple times with my girls (kept the spats oiled), and they rubbed the feather both times. It seems as though I do better keeping the feather clean and oiled AND keeping the girls on good footing. Truthfully, our best feather here is a broodmare that gets her legs washed as needed and that's it! I give her feather a bowl cut every couple of months because it's always dragging on the ground by a couple inches. Rolling Eyes

Isn't the purpose (in theory) to prevent the horse from stepping on the feather and pulling it out? In that case, the spats really would need to always be longer than the feather - correct? Then the horse would step on the spat and ?

Thanks! Nan

Some people use them with sucess. They are best used to protect against long grass and from horses that chew. The leather has to be super well oiled and pliable. I have not had a ton of sucess with them, but they did help on a horse that chewed.

I use spats that are made out very thin pliable leather that is well oiled and non died. I only use them on the front feet and I have great success with them.

Good deal, well - maybe I'll give them another try. Thanks!
